Job Search Tips

So, you’re prepared to make a career move, ready for action. Regardless of whether you’re seeking to change careers or trying to get a full-time job following college, the entire process of searching for the position that’s best for you is really the same and both involve creating a search strategy. A job search strategy is a plan or series of steps that will help you achieve your ultimate goal: getting an offer for a position that matches your passions, skills, values, and character. To assist you in crafting a job search strategy that you'll hold to, there are a series of steps that you should adhere to: firstly define what you want, secondly identify key search activities, and thirdly hold yourself accountable. First, get extremely specific. “I will get a job” or “I’m going to start a new career” just isn't enough. Vague ambitions such as these are not likely to create results. It's like driving blind - you don't have a clear view of the road, and therefore your journey is frightening and your potential for success is proscribed. Make sure you create goals that are clear and specific. Next, identify your key search activities. It’s useful to think in SMART terms: pick goals and activities which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Finally, learn how to hold yourself accountable. If you don’t have some kind of tracking system set up, you’re not likely to know when you’ve succeeded or not. And without having clear markers of your advancement, you could lose motivation. Probably the best thing you could do to ensure you define a clear search strategy to help you ace the interview is work with an expert career coach who knows the ropes and has helped hundreds of people get hired.
