20 Years Experience

Susan Farwell

Coach Message

I coach executives, senior leaders and professionals. I work with both individuals and teams helping them effectively lead through times of change, increase their influence and credibility with their constituents, improve team dialogue and negotiate winning outcomes. I have 20 years of experience as a coach and have had the privilege in that time to work with leaders at many of the world's most prestigious global firms. I have developed a 6 C model for coaching that I use to help leaders gain - clarity, credibility, creativity, connectivity, cultural agility and consistency. From the beginning of a coaching engagement I work on establishing clarity of objectives - what is the leader or team and their organization looking to achieve and how are they perceived by others. This builds a solid foundation for the coaching engagement. I have a reputation for being curious, candid and caring in my approach and I come with deep knowledge and useful skills that I share throughout the coaching relationship.

Case Study 1: Financial Services/Banking Following a mega-merger, a Fortune 1,000 bank asked Susan to help them improve communications, allay fears among employees and build commitment during a time of great change. The engagement began with a coaching assignment. Susan was asked to coach a Senior Vice President and help him develop his messaging and deliver a critical presentation that was broadcast around the globe to the division's 1,600 employees.

Due to the success of this coaching partnership, the SVP then asked Susan to train his direct reports on how to speak before challenging audiences and to help them negotiate and deliver consistent messages. Susan was also asked to consult with corporate communications to develop a communications strategy around the merger and subsequent reorganization. Susan's results on this merger lead to many subsequent engagements with the organization including coaching members of the executive branch.

Case Study 2: Health Products. A global leader in nutritional products was concerned that their scientists and product developers did not communicate well on cross-functional and global senior teams. A pervasive “politeness and unwillingness to challenge or deliver bad news” had become the norm. Senior management feared that this behavior could lead to a lack of innovation and product failure.

Susan was asked to coach the Senior Vice President of Research and Development and his team. The senior team members reported experiencing unresolved conflicts, intercultural issues and poor communication among themselves. Susan conducted confidential interviews with each team member, observed the global team in action, shared her assessment of their strengths and weaknesses as a team, targeted areas for improvement and coached them to set ground rules, improve dialogue and negotiate shared meaning and winning outcomes.

In order to resolve the broader problems R&D faced, Susan tailored a workshop that was rolled out to fifty directors and scientists. The training received high ratings by participants and senior management reported a marked improvement in communication and results following this intervention.
